Exploring the river Deben and beyond
Last night’s crew braved treacherous conditions to paddle up stream for a picnic supper in the boat by the iron bridge at Ufford.
The river was still, the birds were singing, the fish were jumping and the swans escorted us for most of the way. Perfect.
The beauty of having a skiff on the river Deben is that it is sturdy enough to go out in high winds but small enough to explore smaller upriver sections.
Todays crew might have had changeable weather but the scenery was stunning.
We were expecting to be basking in sunshine and eating supper on the terrace but found ourselves unable to see for the rain in our faces and drying socks on the radiator. Thank you British weather!
Despite the miserable weather we had a lovely time and feasted on a shared supper while talking about footplates and beaching, straight backs and unruly coxswains. What’s not to love!
It was lovely to get both skiffs out this afternoon. The sun shone and so did the smiles.
Nothing stops us!
Both boats were out on the water today, bravely beating the wind. There wasn’t a great deal of hanging about and chatting but it was lovely to be out on the river for an hour or so. It’s always nice to welcome new people who would like to give rowing a go so we enjoyed sharing this outing with two prospective new members. Welcome!

With the evening light failing fast we felt the need to squeeze in one more evening row. As you can see the cox and crew had slightly different views so a detour to the Maybush at Waldringfield while the storm passed was essential.
Luckily the storm passed over in just about enough time for a quick pint and chips before setting back.
We often see seals on the river Deben but on this night we watched a seal catch its own fish supper and swim alongside.

Every year we do our bit to entertain the children (and adults) along the Woodbridge waterfront. Here you can see us teamed up with Sæ Wyling for a cold but fun outing
On Sunday, both skiffs were out on the water. The crews included two people having a taster session alongside our regular members. It was good to see the Felixstowe Rowing Club on a long trip up to Woodbridge.
It was surprisingly warm for an October day, but no one was complaining!
Anyone from the shore would have seen both boats enjoying some banter at the bottom of Martlesham Creek. The Whisstock crew made do with a quick KitKat but the Whisper crew had quite a picnic. No need to guess which of the two boats made it home first!
