Exploring the river Deben and beyond
Whisstock, which was launched in April 2019 has had her first face lift. Members of the club took her to a quite barn for some rubbing down and repainting before she goes back on the water later this week.
Thanks go to Bob and Liz Huddlestone for the use of their barn and to all the members that towed, lifted, sanded and painted!
She now looks very bright and shiney 😀
Heading out in the calm sunshine and returning in a storm. But nothing that these guys couldn’t handle…
As summer gives way to autumn we add another layer. switch from crocs and boots, keep calm and carry on!
Some lovely cool Autumn days spent along the river Deben (and in the Waldringfield Maybush!) as ever we keep a keen lookout for new and interesting wildlife.
Given that most of us have been stung by nettles when getting the skiffs in and out, a party of rowing and committee members spent several hours laying a semipermeable membrane and oak chippings to try and stop them reappearing next year.
The chipping floor makes good use of the oak chippings from the Sutton Hoo Ship reconstruction that is taking place further along the river.
Except one maybe….delightful!
Two separate crews navigated the outward and return journeys from Woodbridge to Ipswich, via Felixstow on the 1/2 August. In theory the weather should have been beautiful but that wasn’t always the case as the crews experienced sun, rain, squalls and high winds.
In between the short ‘weather experiences’ we had a great time and made several stops at Landguard Fort, Felixstowe Ferry and Waldringfield. Some stops were muddier than others and in some places we didn’t lose our footwear!
Chairman, Julian Taylor, expertly navigated the river Deben bar to get us out to sea and back again. Big thanks from all of us.
A very good time was had by all.
That difficult choice when the cox asks the crew if they want to row for a few more miles or stop off at the pub…

Lovely morning for a row on the river Deben and a chinwag at the pub.
A fine sunny row to the Maybush for breakfast. But what’s that we see on our table whilst we await our meal? That’s not proper ketchup, what happened to the Heinz? Ah, what goes on at the rowing club, stays at the rowing club!
